Things to consider when choosing a new hot water system for your home
Running out of hot water in the middle of a shower is not pleasant, particularly on a chilly morning! Many people would agree, that a reliable hot water system is an essential requirement in your home.
Cost: Whilst costing more at the beginning, an efficient hot water system may reduce the cost of your energy bills in the future
Household size and consumption pattern: 50 litres of hot water per day is typically used by one person. You also need to consider if e.g. you all shower at roughly the same time of the day.
Space available: Some existing homes may have been built with the hot water system taking up as little room as possible, therefore, a hot water unit may not fit in the space in which case, a new location may need to be considered.
Existing system upgrade: An example of this could be a current electric hot water system could be turned into a split system with a solar hot water unit or heat pump unit.
Available energy sources: Not all areas have natural gas available and if you are considering a solar hot water system, ideally your roof needs to be north facing and have adequate room.
Hot water safety
Of course safety is important when it comes to hot water, especially around children.
To prevent the growth of bacteria such as Legionella (which can be harmful to humans), hot water storage systems must be a minimum temperature of 60°C. The problem with this temperature is that water at 60°C can cause a burn to the skin in less than 5 seconds.
To reduce the chance of burns, by law, all new hot water systems, in residential properties, require a tempering valve to be fitted ensuring that water straight from the tap only reaches 50°C.
